Job Overview:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Director, Data Engineering and Development to join United Airlines' Data Engineering team. This role is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and operation of enterprise-wide data and analytics solutions. You will lead a team of engineers and collaborate closely with business and technology leaders to drive forward innovative, cloud-based data platforms. You will also be responsible for ensuring data governance, security, and accessibility across the organization.

As a Senior Director, you will guide your team in building high-scale data systems, implementing data pipelines, and optimizing cloud solutions, with a focus on large-scale enterprise data architecture. This position is ideal for someone with extensive experience in data engineering, cloud computing (specifically AWS), and big data technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Management:

Lead a team of engineers to design, develop, and maintain enterprise-scale data systems.
Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering collaboration and best practices.
Set strategic goals for the team and align them with business objectives.
Ensure technical best practices and architectural standards are followed across the team.
Lead by example, promoting continuous improvement and innovative thinking.

Data Engineering & Cloud Solutions:

Architect and build cloud-based data solutions using AWS technologies (S3, Lambda, Dynamo, EC2).
Develop and optimize large-scale data systems and data pipelines.
Lead efforts to operationalize and scale data platforms with a focus on data quality, governance, and accessibility.
Implement advanced data processing and transformation using technologies like Python, Scala, Hadoop, and Redshift.

Collaboration & Strategy:

Work closely with business and analytics teams to translate business needs into technical solutions.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data is accessible for analysis and decision-making.
Guide the integration of data pipelines and event-driven models (e.g., Kinesis, Kafka).

Continuous Learning & Innovation:

Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
Explore new opportunities to leverage AI, machine learning, and predictive analytics.

Required Qualifications:

Educational Background: BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in managing technical teams and projects.
- 4+ years of leadership experience in large cloud environments, particularly AWS.
- 6+ years of experience in software development using Java, Python, Scala.
- 4+ years of experience with continuous streaming and real-time data technologies.
- Expertise in large data processing frameworks like Redshift, Hadoop, and cloud-based data warehousing.
- Proven experience with distributed data systems, ETL/ELT processes, and building data pipelines.
- Deep knowledge of data models, data dictionaries, and data lineage in an enterprise environment.
- Familiarity with cloud-based analytics platforms (AWS, Palantir Foundry) and tools like Kinesis and Kafka.
Technical Skills:
- Extensive experience with AWS Cloud technologies (S3, Lambda, Dynamo, EC2).
- Expertise in Python, Scala, and Java for data engineering.
- Experience with NoSQL databases and data warehouses.
- Solid understanding of data governance, security, and compliance in a cloud environment.
- Experience with data lakes and data lakes architecture.
- Familiarity with machine learning and predictive analytics concepts.
People Management:
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing and developing large teams.
